And the disease wasn't killed off until vaccines came around. It's just that conditions for it too flourish were lessened.

The plague still isn't completely gone, every year a few random cases pop up, even in the U.S.

Thanks celti, that's what I was gonna say. Some countries have more cases (India for some reason, but also a lot of African countries) and it use to affect coastal cities but now with the development of airport we may or may not, one day, get a sudden and very efficient outburst.

@purplepumpkin most of the cases are a direct result of contact with infected animals. One case in Colorado I believe, was a little girl who touched a dead squirrel. So I can definitely see why India and Africa would have higher occurrences given the close proximity to an array of wildlife.
