I wish this was more common, and/or at least a sheet with the models and types of amenities. Many times I’ve stayed in hotels and either me or someone else in the room has loved the pillows, or the mattress, or some other thing and wanted to purchase it for home, even if not from the hotel than from the supplier. Even if it was a hasstle or slightly awkward to ask, usually the staff are unable to help identify the item or it’s origin (not that they should know off the top of their heads.)
This is very brave, as it would difficult to prove in court it was the guest. It will deter, though, which is the point. I like this sign - matter-of-fact, friendly and pleasurable to read. Creates a strong word picture in describing how to pay.
I don’t disagree, but I am not sure how brave it is. They have your card and the authorization to charge it, as well as geberally an amount already on hold as security. Assuming you check your bill in a timely manner, you can try to dispute the charges with your bank, in which case the hotel can simply turn it to a collections agency that will report it against your credit if not paid. So either way to avoid the hit you must pay it, and take action to try and stop it. In the end the dispute with the CC company may not work as the hold will exist. So from there it is on you to accrue the costs and hassles of small claims to recoup. You may get your legal fees back if you win, but any time and lost wages you can’t claim. Also small claims doesn’t hold “beyond all reasonable doubt” and has a different burden of proof than criminal courts (at lest in the US.) So they can prove you had access and responsibility to secure the room, meaning that unless you can prove that either the hotel...
... didn’t take appropriate measures to secure your room and it is most likely a party you did not authorize gained access and stole the items in question, or that a hote employee stole the items (which they could just as easily likely do at some other point without raising the flags that stealing from your room would; or that they specifically stole from your room to set you up for charges as a tort,) the hotel still doesn’t have responsibility as you are the room holder and agreed to be responsible for the facilities and all in them save for where the obligation of the hotel to provide basic mitigation existed. So you’d have to be willing to go through all that... over $25-100 or so dollars, knowing that if you lose you could be responsible for thousands in legal costs to all parties and the court.
