In my college we just leave our stuff without asking anyone, and no one I know has ever had anything stolen. More than once I've left my laptop running on a table in the hall to go grab a bite, sometimes even go grocery shopping, and nothing happened.
Last year a girl in my class accidentally left her handbag with her car keys, wallet etc on the parking lot, and found it back 2 hours later. We also recently got a group mail saying someone had left their headphones and iPhone 8 at the library and had to claim it back.

If i was to leave my phone (which has tape on the back to keep bits attached) sitting infront of me and stood up to get my test when the prof called me name it might be gone when i get back.
