Matching interests aren't a prerequisite.
Not engaging with people on a superficial level seems to be the issue here.
I, for one, appreciate it.

Sometimes I find it nice to have a barrier if pleasantries, but most of the time I feel awkward about it. I’d rather see people’s true selves, I just don’t always have the energy for it. I’ve had mixed reactions from going into how I’m really doing.
