It's cruel to over feed cats/animals too. Neglect comes in many different guises.

chad is right. You are responsible for your pet's welfare. And there is such a thing as unhealthily fat, and when a cat gets like that, it is the owner's fault. What's the cat going to do? It likes food, and doesn't understand the concept of obesity.
