While rotary engine helicopters have existed, they are very rare. Even in aviation the rotary engine isn’t widely used and is most often used in home aviation. Radial engines and other designs often are used in helicopter, most military helicopters use turbine engines, including the UH60 variants which are the most widely used troop transport helicopter on the battlefield. “So one would not likely hear rotary engines of helicopters” to start- however the iconic “helicopter sound” isn’t the engine but the audio Doppler of the blades themselves as they move through the air. So even in a rotary helicopter, at a distance from outside the cabin one is not likely hearing the engine if they hear a “rotary” or “rotating” sound. A rotary engine is a design of internal combustion engine first produced by Dr. Felix Wankel. It has very few moving parts and produces high output smoothly for a given size. It has some drawbacks and application selection and design are crucial to success in its use.
