Umm.... no. They do not deserve to know why they didn’t get hired. It is polite to do so, but it isn’t something you deserve anymore than a salesperson deserves to know why you didn’t buy their product. It’s helpful, but not something you deserve. You deserve a fair chance to apply. If you want to know why you didn’t get hired ask. Just as many people don’t care, don’t want to know, or already know. If you went to bucktooth community and have 0 experience and are applying for a skilled or high profile position- it’s reasonable to assume that someone with more experience or education cane along. If you researched the company at all, and didnt forward a professional image in line with the organization- you’d know why. But in the end- they’ll likely give you a generic professional response that won’t help you much. “We want someone more seasoned,” “we aren’t sure you’d be a good fit to our culture,” blah blah. They are legally on the hook and are likely not going to tell you...
... in plain English “we are racist/sexist.” “We are actually going to hire my buddy Steve and this is all a formality as a public company.” “You sound dumb.” “We don’t like your name.” “We have a progressive image but find your hair/tattoo/etc to be unacceptable.” “We don’t like you.” And many reasons they didn’t hire you- even if not legally actionable aren’t readily fixed. If they want someone from an Ivy League are you going to go back to school to get the same degree with a different logo on it for $200k?
If they want someone older or younger what do you do about that? If it’s a tattoo or something about you that can’t easily or at all change how do deal with that? If you just “seem bleh..” in whatever way- or you have a “vibe” or a “look” how do you change it? And if it’s subjective like you talk too much and you go to the next place and speak little and they say “well- you just weren’t very vocal. Wedding fee you had much to say” what then? Repeat until you get it right?
You know how to get a job. If you don’t google it or rea one of the millions of books on it. Dress the part, talk the talk, be the best most professional you, have the qualifications (and the best quality ones oh can...) that’s it. And FYI they may very well have intended to call you back and decided after you left on another candidate. Or- crazy idea- call them Monday if they don’t call. It’s called follow up. If your coworker says they’ll email you specs for a project and they don’t, do you wait 6 months until your boss asks and say “nothings happened because Jane never emailed me...” or do you contact Jane and follow up if you don’t get a timely email? If they tell you Monday they went another direction feel free to ask why, but know they don’t owe you an answer. For the record though- hired or not- if they say they will contact you they should, even if it is to tell you they didn’t go with you. Any company that doesn’t, you aren’t missing out by not working there.
