Fun fact. In the U.S. (Ohio and Indiana anyways) they legally do have to inital and or mark the operating foot/ankle for any surgery prior to putting the patient out due to the fact the WRONG one has been amputated on a patient before.
For anyone missing the joke, they were basically marking the ankle for no reason. He already had his leg amputated so there was no reason to mark the leg.
When I got eye surgery my mom was panicking and insisted until the nurse put a circle and several arrows around my right eye... Back then I made fun of her. Then I read about medical errors and... it wasn't so funny anymore.
