One of the only Euro nations I respect. Happy independence day, Poland!

I’m happy for Poland, truly. But good grief, the bird looks like a blood-stained pigeon that got run over by a Mack truck. I know they want to honor their history but I hope making a mental association between freedom and roadkill wasn’t the feeling they were trying to evoke.

Poland is a nation that has had to fight desperately to survive for it's entire existence. They have been bloodied and beaten time and time again, but their ruthless will to survive, their lust for life, their ability to always keep their heads over their own blood and that of their enemies, in my book, makes the bloodied eagle the perfect symbol of their hard-fought independence.

I would’ve voted for a phoenix to get a similar meaning across. But given the history that you’ve explained, I can see your point. On a side note, good luck in your basic training wherever you might be.

I've been out of basic for awhile now (Fuck Benning! Even if it was the best and most hardcore BCT around...). Still in training though. I got to meet some polish soldiers and we talked a bit. Much love and respect to them and theirs!

Poland was the only country that didn't collaborate with nazis and the Soviet Union.

I don't think they were independent between September of 1939 and 1945

Before 1918 they didn't exist as a country for over 120 years.
