Tanks were invented by Britain, and actually ended WWI because they could just drive over the 4-year-old trenches and blow things up. At first, Britain said the tanks were to be filled with water to resupply their own front lines without using the trench mazes. But then a commander realised you could armor the h*ck out of them and fill them with soldiers instead. In 1916, he did that and it broke the German line. Both sides scrambled to improve the design from that point. Today, Britain says that was the intention all along.

Also, the lunatics who decided to capture Mephisto were Australian. I love that, in WWI, everyone on both sides were scared of Australians because they showed literally no fear, and were typically smiling and laughing at wildly inopportune times, like when they were getting shelled or everyone was dying <3

If podcasts are part of your life, I strongly recommend Dan Carlin's Hardcore History. He did a GIGANTIC podcast about WWI that's worth every minute.
It's called Blueprint for Armageddon and it's made up of six episodes that are like 4.5 hours each. It took me a couple weeks to get through it. The subject matter can get gruesome, but he is good about warning you first.

Dan mainly focuses on how WWI happened, why it lasted so long, how the whole world got dragged in, and how awful it would have been to be involved.
As an Aussie who has lost family in both world wars, I totally understand the rationale behind this action, and applaud it. You glorious bastards, you.
