Its not backwards... is it? It looks like it's just after 11 (11 going down to the right) If that's the case, the thing would be moving clockwise.

But the positioning makes it appear in mirrored order as to what we are programmed to expect from any clock. It no doubt works, but it just doesn't sit right

It doesn't matter which way its turning, aesthetically it looks like it reversed.
