When I was growing up and going to birthday parties, coming from a large family we didn't have much money. So my mom would go to a dollar store and spend about 5 dollars and make a gift basket for me to give.
It had a coloring book, crayons, candy, a little dollar toy, and stickers.
As I got older the gift bag had different items in it.
And each time the kids loved them.
.
I give the same kind of gift bag to my daughter to give to her friends for their birthdays when she says one is having a birthday. She has 4 really close friends.
Hardly anyone has birthday parties anymore it seems.
As a mom of a 4 & 5 year old, I can tell you it’s hard to have parties now. For school friends, anyway. You have to invite all the kids in the class and, being someone who doesn’t open up to people very much, it’s a tough choice.
We don't have parties for my daughter anymore who is now 11 her last was her 8th we had it at church.
I just had it the last hour of sunday class.
It is because we don't want her to go through a party where kids don't show up.
It is why we always go to every party she is invited to.
When I was four-five my parents had what can be considered a lot of money (things are vastly different now^^) and for my 5th birthday they organized this huge party where all 36 kids in my class were invited, and they had made a lot of games like the one where you throw a ball at a pyramid of cans or the one where you fish small packages out of a pool... There was at least one toy for every person invited so that everyone could get something one way or another. They had said on the invites that the only thing guests had to bring was a smile, so a lot of them did just that, some of them brought very touching gifts (a marble I admired, a little purse and hairtie made by a mom-that I still use-, a t-shirt with a garden gnome...) and a few others got me "standard" presents. I still remember it like it was yesterday, and as I grew up I realized my parents were really awesome for throwing this party and making sure that no kid would feel left aside.
