As much as I agree with not having kids do things they won't need to the point it can fuck up their GPA so they can't get into college, the math isn't impossible. It might be hard, yeah, but not impossible.

It isn't even about the math itself. It's about the way of thinking: a structured, logical way to solve complicated problems.

Half of math post middle school is randomly plugging formulas into equations. There was a section where we literally had to write theoretical math paragraphs on why the equation was true and could be solved

My job requires the use of math every day. Lots of geometry and trigonometry.

15 years of my life I worked in logistics- transportation, inventory, etc. there are tons of common jobs that almost any one from almost any background can get in to and grow a career from (if they can pick up the job and make the cut...), and many require math daily. So yeah- I’m with poke, if you aren’t using math at work you’re using it in life, and if you aren’t doing either there is a very good chance you could likely improve your life by starting to.

That’s not common core!!! Common core just means all teachers are teaching about the same thing at about the same time. That way, if a child moves to a new school, they are doing the same things.

Math is a tool. If the universe is a story, a program, math is the language it is written in. From planning parties, working around the house, calculating schedules, tracking events and information, building and engineering projects and structures, doing taxes, shopping, to trying to understand the universe itself- math is that tool. Like all tools the more you use it the more value you may see in it- but it’s a tool you only need to use rarely for it to pay for itself. Had you not learned math, you’d be whining they should have taught you. Had you learned something else, you’d be whining that you do t needthat but need something else thy didn’t teach. It’s up to you how and if you use math, but they gave it to you and there’s is a lot you can do with it. And yes- I don’t like many newer methods used in teaching math, but that doesn’t devalue the subject.
