The taming of cats is linked to humans' agricultural revolution ca 10k years ago. We grew grain and for the first time were able to store food in large amounts. Then came the rodents. Cats helped with this problem and in return got shelter and affection. It is cruel and selfish to lock these predators indoors, regardless of their impact on endangered birds. Please don't do it.
Wait, what? Cats were domesticated because they liked the shelter humans gave them but it's cruel and selfish to keep them indoors? Is it less cruel to let a cat get hit by a car? Or killed by foxes/wolves/coyotes? Or contract feline AIDS? Cats can get plenty of exercise and stimulation indoors, and not everyone lives in areas where it's safe to let cats outside.
Yes, it's cruel to keep an animal in a completely synthetic habitat. If a cat is injured, it is sad but by no means cruel. If you don't have the appropriate environment for a particular pet, then you shouldn't have that pet.
It is very irresponsible to have a cat and let it roam free given their impact on the environment. If you let them out it is just as bad as releasing invasive species in an habitat and thus completely ruining the balance of the ecosystem. If you can't keep them indoors because there is too little space for them there, then don't get a cat period.
Also I'm not talking about wild cats that are naturally present in the ecosystem, only domestic ones that are bred ad that are completely ruining the wild fauna. It is cruel and selfish to get a cat for you own enjoyement and let it kill animals outside. They are pets, and should be treated as such. Otherwise they are only vermine that should be killed off, it's a harsh truth but it is a truth nonetheless, and I'm gonna get maaany dislikes for that
