Racial mixing will definitely impact it, though even prior to that race via skeletal examination is not 100% accurate at the best of times, in the best of conditions.
'
I *imagine* it works much like any other genetic feature: the more diluted or regressed a particular trait becomes, the less likely it is to show prominently in a person's features.
'
However, "shape of the skull" itself is a bit of a misleading term, since it's not the shape of the entirety of the skull, but rather the traits of it's features that are used for identification. Eye sockets and noses tend to be big ones if I remember right.
There are variations among races as well. Saying one skull is a representation of every white person is idiotic. Yeah, there are subtle differences, but those are trends.
From the little I've heard of that situation (which admittedly is not much at all), he was trying to claim races have different levels of intelligence. This is not the case, though certain races DO tend to have more highly developed areas of the brain-- this has more to do with CULTURE than race. And is not the same thing as intelligence.
I'll use music as an example-- Asian cultures tend to be very sound-oriented. Their languages are a lot more tonal than english-- which tends to be a very flat language. People in Asian cultures have been found to have a MUCH greater proficiency for pitch-accuracy than europeans and north Americans.
'
Taking these statistics, someone could theoretically come to the conclusion: "well Asians are just better at music because of their race, and that makes them smarter than other races."
'
What it actually indicates has more to do with, again, culture. Potentially that part of their brains is more developed, but it's likely a result that could be replicated in any other race on the planet given the appropriate adjustments to their surroundings and enough time (it may take several years before it starts becoming noticeable genetically-- this I am unsure on).
The skull identification method is NOT claiming that different races are less intelligent etc. It is drawing attention to observations made in the forensic field over the years-- that, just as men and women and children have variations in their skeletal structures, so, too, do people of different races.
'
This is not racism, it's simply an observation-- and a tool forensic scientists sometimes have to partially rely on to try and make an educated guess on what person they're dealing with, because sometimes there is no other way to tell.
'
It is NOT an exact science. Especially due to racial mixing etc. It only has around 70-80% accuracy I think I remember reading somewhere. But it gives people an indication.
I'm not sure why anyone finds it surprising or offensive that our bone structures would have variations. Just as black people have a tendency to be taller, Asian people have a tendency to be shorter, Europeans are more likely to have blue eyes than other races...
'
Iirc they actually found at one point that some races have a higher bone density than others as well. Or how redheads are more sensitive to certain types of pain and less susceptible to anesthesia.
'
Our genetics tell the story of the traits that allowed our DNA ancestors to survive. They vary on the outside and the inside, because the world demanded something different of all of us depending on where and how we lived. And yet, for all that, the core building blocks remain the same.
'
I personally think it's truly fascinating. It's not an indication that any race is lesser than another. It's simply our genetics.
