Yes. Anecdotally it is a known fact (sorry for lack of source-) but one of the first things that is taught in any military or other survival course: the most important thing to survive is a will to survive. It’s basic evolution that biology asides- the organism that will push hardest, longest, and be willing to do what needs done tends to survive. It’s also a medical trope- the patient that “just gives up” or is “a fighter.” While it’s still ill understood we also know that emotion does play some part in physical health directly. ... chronic stress, coupled with sudden extreme emotional and mental trauma, and then the physical trauma of having twins- which in and of itself can easily kill a person. Her body and mind were not nearly as tuned as the other examples, and she just witnessed the love of her life almost instantly flip into a child murdering nut job who stood for everything she hated. One of the biggest sins of the prequels is they hang on the audience being invested in the interpersonal relationships and empathizing with the characters- but don’t build that connection. Cloud Atlas does more in snippets to make us feel connected to its many characters than the prequels managed in 3 full length films. So I understand why it falls flat with many. But if you look past the “place holders” on screen and visualize the ideas you can see where it makes sense and should have been quite moving.
