You don't know where that money came from. It could very well include marked bills, and the police could come to you instead

My first thought was "that's probably not clean money, and I don't want to have someone like a dealer/cheap hitman/... on my ass". We're like two sides of the same coin here kittycat!

Good news if it isn't claimed after so many days it is returned to the finder.

I wouldn't call that stupid at all. Usually that much money will be reported and also usually the finder will be rewarded by more than just karma.

If they find out you kept it couldn't you be charged with theft since you didn't bring it in?

if you don't hand it in, it's considered theft by finding, in the US, if no one claims it, it's considered drug money. However, in Australia, if you find and hand in money, the rightful owner has to state exactly how much, what bag and the reason for the money. in 30 days, if unclaimed, it's given to the finder, tax-free. Only once i have heard of, when a bag of about $40k was found, the owner, was a employee (chinese), who was buying a car on behalf of his boss, left the money by accident, got a loan and bought the car.
