Ariel isn’t a queen. She’s a princess. So there is not even a basis for comparison. We can assume that she could become queen of the sea because her father and mother are king and queen and presumably won’t live or reign forever. However- Ariel is shown to have sisters, older sisters to boot- which would likely make her low in line of succession. Additionally, her attachment to dry land and relationship with royalty from a dry land kingdom makes it even less likely that she would be selected, willing, or even eligible to serve as queen of the sea. It would be more likely she be named queen of her betrothed’s (or later movies- husbands) kingdom than of the sea. Much as it would be nonsensical to ask “Who was a better president, Richard Nixon or Nancy Pelosi...” Nixon would win that one since Pelosi is not and has never been president- just because she COULD be if the people ahead of her die doesn’t make it so.
Ah ha! So- it seems the question is null. Thank you for the information. I have not actually seen the movie yet and so was unaware and unqualified to speak on Moana or her credentials.
Just out of curiosity speaking. Isn't Ariel a goddess? I mean technically Poseidon is her father right? Or is it Neptune? And I agree neither are Queens.
I believe how it works is Poseidon is brother of Zeus and hades and God of the sea. He decided he had a thing for a goddess named Amphitrite, who decided she didn't have a thing for him. She ran away from him and hid, causing Poseidon to essentially become stalker of the century. He never did find her, though, but eventually his dolphin found her and convinced her to become poseidon's wife (which probably turned out to be a mistake because she was later demoted to mistress).

Poseidon went on to have 8 children, one of whom was Triton, a merman and a demi-god.
'
In Disney Triton's wife is named Athena (and we assume is not based on the Greek Athena) and they have 7 daughters (1 for each of the seven seas). I believe Athena is dead in the little mermaid. Ariel is one of those daughters (the youngest). So this might make her less than a demi-god.
'
Added note: iirc Ursula was originally supposed to be Triton's sister, so figure that one out
As a side note: iirc in Moana (I've only seen it once), the sea was choosing to help Moana. It was sentient and seemed to have it's own will. In the Little Mermaid the ocean is essentially just water, and it can be and is controlled multiple times through the use of Triton's trident. Where this leaves us on the Queen v queen spectrum I'm not sure, but felt like I'd throw it out there
As it pertains to Triton’s status as a god- Within the Disney cannon and EU I can find no mention of him being a god. In the original little mermaid film he refers to himself as a merman- suggesting that he is the same species as the other Merfolk and not a deity. He is seen to age, and his story differed greatly from that of the Greek god Triton. Athena was step child to the Greek god Triton and not wife. Disney’s Hercules encompasses Disney’s Greek inspired universe and features Poseidon and Triton who are alarmist certainly some degrees removed or completely removed from Triton in the little mermaid. Additionally, the little Mermaid appears to be an amalgamation based on several European cultures and a blend of periods from the Middle Ages, Renaissance, early 1800’s and so forth. So I think it’s most likely that Disney’s Triton is not a god, and most likely not a demigod or even devine- I haven’t seen any evidence that he is, and to me, much evidence suggests he is not.
Just saying to the comment below of her probably becoming queen but she has older sisters. If it works the same way as the royal family technology Ariels daughter would be the next to receive the thrown over Ariels sisters ( unless they had children we dont know about)
But whatever just a theory
Ariel is better and will always be better wanna know why??? Because she's a mermiad, that's why.
What does moana have? A chicken.
That would make Ariel a demigod though, not a god
