Apparently people who drive it frequently keep chairs in their car so when you have a 100 car pile up, you can sit and watch. (Was told by an older friend who lived in Germany for a long time.)
Firstly there are few remaining parts of German Autobahn without speed limit. As Germany is a Transit-nation for most of inter-European goods, there is so much traffic that you barely can step on it at all. There are constructions and maintenance all over the place and currently a common speed limit of 130 km/h is politically discussed.
