I saw this in theaters and everyone around me was screaming at Starlord for ruining everything. I'm not gonna lie, I may or may not have screamed in agony.
Am I the only one who found this scene completely out of character? Admittedly I'm not hugely well versed in Quill, but the dude was literally willing to kill Gamora to stop Thanos, killed his own father and then handled his surrogate father dying, but now Thanos has killed Gamora and he can't keep his shit together for another .5 seconds?
'
I know they needed an excuse to have Thanos succeed, and I could see Quill potentially screwing it up due to various shenanigans, but something about the way this in particular played out just didn't sit right
He stood there for several minutes restraining himself from doing anything. So either he is entirely impulsive and the amount of restraint demonstrated prior to this was out of character, or he has some ability to control himself when important things are at stake, in which case losing it in the very last second makes no sense.
'
Again, considering he was willing, prepared to, and even attempted to kill Gamora to stop Thanks, knowing that was the most important thing to her, it just seemed like a weird leap to me.
It made sense to me. As @famousone said, he's passionate and impulsive. His plans are always half-assed at best and then he just kind of improvises. All that trauma built up also explains why he snapped. No pun intended. He only snapped once Nebula told him what happened, at which point Tony begged him not to snap... but you could see it, it was the last straw. He really DID try to hold it together for a second or two there.
Think about the nice guy in HS picked on by a bully, usually calm and chill and jokes when he's joked about. you can see it's a defense mechanism, but you never expect him to actually erupt, then one day he does... and he beats the living shit out of the bully in the middle of the hallway... except.. you know.. in this case the bully is fucking Thanos.
