To be more precise- certain species of octopus such as the Pacific Giant Octopus (Enteroctopus dofleini) Are effected but not quite in this way exactly. After mating, The male AND female go through senescence. Basically their regenerative functions stop on a cellular level and they start to decay. They stop eating and foraging. The male (who no longer has a reproductive organ) will wander around the open water fairly aimlessly. He won’t or will barely return to his den making him easy prey. The female will tend the eggs, watching them and keeping them clean. When they hatch she will blow them out of the den where they will float to the surface in a plankton like stage until they develop or are taken out by elements or predation. The female then either becomes prey or- if male or female lives long enough the decay continues and they develop white lesions. They will from that point either decay alive or more likely succumb to infection and die. Their life’s purpose appears to be mating.
