Well, we (by we I mean the English - not necessarily the British in the strictest sense of the word) mean we (kinda) invented the language so we do get some say in these matters lol
A colonist in the States named Noah Webster actually drove the biggest wedge between English and American English. He intentionally spelled words wrong and added a bunch of new ones. After the Merriam brothers bought the rights to his little dictionary, they added a ton more words and their new version of Webster's dictionary sold like crazy.

As a side note, even though I'm American, I've always agreed with the phrase "simplified English" for our dialect. It was actually Mr. Webster who made it his goal to simplify it.
