In my book there's 1 character, a bisexual girl. Course there's also the uber racist, sexist, homophobic villain but I don't think he counts.

I have a charger that's lesbian and in a relationship with a bisexual, but I dunno if people will pick up on that since they're both relatively minor characters.

My main characters are two lesbians, one possibly non-binary and one asexual... the others are straight or possibly gay for each other who cares

Not really. Statistically it's never more than 2%-5% of any population of 100k or greater. This also seems to be a historical statistic as it really doesn't fluctuate outside of those figures. What is more, is the amount of coverage in the news, social media, and Hollywood. This has grown out of proportion to the relative size of the LGTB population. This means that while the studies are correct it seems as if its much greater, say around 20%-30%.
Polls tend to result in a 1 to 7% result. The last "serious" study in the USA concluded that 4.5% of Americans identify as LGBT, and more women than men did. As for the media coverage of the LGBT community, I wish I got some references. I failed to find any serious source on this specific topic. Thanks in advance :)
I too have had no luck with quantifying the uptrend in media/social coverage. It's pervasive in that it's everywhere now but a definitive source doesn't seem to exist. It's just "popular" and "progressive" to support the LGTB community, at least on paper. No study that I could find that looked into how much more a topic is in the news than in the past. Prior to at least the mid 90s as far as I could recall there was very little LGBT coverage in the news. It was only after social media evolved to the point where news agencies could no longer ignore it that it started getting picked up. Now, of course, you can find it anywhere if you just look. Is it possible that the polls and studies are just way off and now that there are more outlets we're seeing the real numbers? Maybe but not very likely. It's much more likely that like with any social movement there will be an uptrend in coverage until saturation occurs and then it will fade off. You see this all the time with minority coverage.
Honestly though I went to a book festival recently and it seemed like nearly every other book I picked up was only about lgbt teens or about some normal story with the last line of the synopsis being “and her brother’s gay”. I love representation but it tiring when it’s so aggressive and widespread- I’m saying this as an lgbt member myself bc I know way too many angsty Uber members love to attack any non gay person with an opinion
But there's plenty of books with non LGTB characters in them, also why do some see that it is so important to add this, if it helps with moving a plot along or character development, then sure it makes, but just going and saying oh yeah that ones gay, doesn't do anything for the story, with a lot of my writings I tend to keep relationships out of the story simply because adding it in, doesn't do anything for the plot, that's not saying I haven't come up with a story with with relationships in it, and those relationships and preferences always take a back seat to the main plot point of the character.
