In the South you don't need assistance. I've women hold an entire conversation from half a block apart.

I asked a coworker about this and she said in their culture if you speak softer, you are being secretive and skelm (lying/thieving/planning things around people's backs) - to combat this, they speak loud enough for everyone to hear so such accusations cannot be made.
