They have a local problem with vampire bat populations and the mine inspector position has the job to clean them out for health and safety.

Oh my god that makes so much sense!! I just assumed "vampire dens" was a metaphorical way of calling some sort of topological oddity of these mines.
I always forget vampire bats are a thing.
