I love anime and a bunch of weeb and nerd shit but I was taught proper manners and can separate fiction from reality. I think it is more upbringing and social anxiety than the anime in the end, people will cling to what makes them feel safe and special.

While this is sometimes true it isn’t always. I’m old. I remember a time where basically no one knew what anime was let alone had seen any sign of it. Most people didn’t realize speedracer was anime. There were fans here and there and early adopters in the 70’s but it wasn’t until the 80’s where you started to really see people who weren’t really into anime be aware of it- although most people still wouldn’t know what you were talking about unless you said “Japanese cartoons.” But kids got teased all the time for liking anime. Kids who didn’t wear costumes or clothing (there was very little available at the time anyway, not like now, and you couldn’t look online so you either knew an import place or had ties to japan most of the time.) but people would mock others relentlessly and brand them as weird even if they’d already met them and thought they were alright to hang around. It could totally change someone’s opinion to find out you watched “Japanese cartoons.”

The 90’s was when it really started moving into the mainstream though. Franchises like transformers had made huge inroads to show profitability and networks started to show things like Dragon Ball, Sailor moon, Tekkaman Blade (Technoman) etc. Gundam started to become known but many people didn’t become aware until Gundam Wing was broadcast on cable. But just like D&D or at one time computers- Anime was an instant way to be labeled a “dork” or misfit just for liking it.

DND is starting to go the way of computers thankfully enough, a lot of big weekly dnd shows on twitch and youtube helped a lot to get it started down the path of normalization tho itll never actually reach the level that computers have thanks to the fact that computers have practical uses outside of entertainment and social interactions.

Can confirm. There was this one kid in my grade who ran around like that all the time, everywhere except when in the hallways (instead of being outside) he'd slow it down to this weird ass walk and make zoom zoom noises for himself. I used to run around as a dinosaur, but that was in elementary school. This kid was in high school.
