They gave him frankincense and Myrrh both fragrance products. When you realize the kid was born in a barn surrounded by animals those was BY FAR the best gifts.
Arguably, but the post points out that the lyric is dumb, not the story.
Also, the wise men brought things that would be highly valuable and would be acceptable gifts to bring a king. They had no idea the child would be born in a barn until they arrived there.
But, Bethlehem was overstocked with people. And so a lot of people were stuffed in rooms with too many other people. And so, totally, they could buy a blanket off of somebody because there would be some grossly over warm rooms.
Ok-
Even IF we take the rest of the narrative at face value- now where in then Bible is the date or really any information for the time of the birth of Jesus given. As early as the second century there is no evidence the birth of Christ was celebrated at the time, and we have records of debate over when it was with several widely held dates. Much later the birth was standardized as December 25th- however the Bible does state Shepard’s were tending their flocks at night when Jesus was born- which would be unlikely in winter but common in the spring or summer seasons of shearing. That fact alone though is hardly conclusive. But- as for the gifts they brought...
... you know what is generally NOT a good gift for most new parents? Diapers. Seems practical right? And diapers are expensive. But babies grow fast. So either they end up with more small diapers than they can use, or boxes of diapers they can’t use for months or more. You don’t know the babies birth weight either so sizing is tough. Likewise- if the baby doesn’t have blankets in the winter it ain’t gonna be alive by the time you arrive. So that’s out the window. They didn’t have car seats and breast pumps and the like back them either, and a crib or furniture is hard to transport with a baby from a stable to their home. So... small and valuable things that can be sold to pay to raise a baby or enjoyed by the family are great gifts in that situation.

O.o
