What is the norm in the US? How much percent-wise do people spend on their rent/mortgage? About half of my paycheck after taxes goes to that, and I have a fairly cheap apartment (Sweden).

Ours is about 1/5 of our monthly net. Food is our largest expense, but we also have 3 children (includes 2 teenage boys.)

Yeah property tax is ridiculous. The hotel I work at pays 65,000 in property tax per year.
