what always bothered me about this scene, you can see the steps on the side of the cliff where they cut the rock, but how do the arms stay? I mean, they show separate square blocks, can't possibly defy gravity

What bothered me was that in the front cut they both have the same arm out (left I think) and when they're shown from the back one has his right and one has his left arm out.
