Some of the insults aren't even really insults, we just prefer different things.

The most I see Americans get upset- asides from ultra patriot nationalists which every country has as at least a vocal minority- is at cheap hypocritical jabs and the like. The fact is that America is kind of like Justin Bieber or some other tabloid celebrity. A whole lot of people who claim to dislike or disapprove of it follows it obsessively and knows all these little details about it. When it goes to rehab or has a meltdown the world won’t forget, but when it breaks records for charity work or saves a stranded boater or does community service that just gets overlooked because people are just looking for reasons to have something unifying to dislike. Likewise- when a friend or coworker has a break up, affair, or a drug problem etc- we don’t generally maliciously gossip about it for months or years.

But when it’s a celebrity we make it more personal than if it were happening to someone we know, and we follow the details and form theories and opinions and take sides and use it to define what we think of that person. So in that way I think America is a lot like a celebrity, that it is relatively wealthy and well known, and that even people who have never really gotten to know it on a personal level feel like they know it and who it is, and can judge it as if they were intimately acquainted because they feel like they are. Most of the countries that have a global presence and wealth are gossiped about and held in low regard by many- because surprisingly, regardless of nation or status or culture we are all just people, and people tend to have the capacity to do good and bad things.

But Americans do tend to try and set the facts straight, because as flattering in its own way that t is to be help so important by others that they have to follow your every move and spend their time and energy thinking about you- it’s also important to set straight misconceptions. Because many Americans are good kind people, just like you’ll find in any group in the world. They do t try to harm others or even actively work against it- and are just trying to live their lives, but aren’t responsible for everything their government or countrymen do which they too may well disapprove of.

To our celebrity example- sure you have celebrities who are just plain jerks, who talk down to people and get away with murder because they’re rich and powerful, who spread hate and destruction and just don’t care- but you also have ones who are kind and down to earth as much as they can be, who try hard to do right and treat people well. So we can judge Kanye West based on what he does or supports, but we can’t judge every musician based on how he acts, just like we can’t judge every person from a country based on how a few of them act either. Most Americans just want to live their lives and get along with others doing the same.
