In the comics, animated shows, and the MCU movies, he's always been able to adjust his eyes. The only times he couldn't were when Sony was in creative control with the live-action versions.

I believe the explanation for his eyepieces is that his senses are really heightened so he needs them to focus in on certain things

That's the MCU version. The comics don't even fucking bother. Iron Man's face does the same thing in the comics sometimes; pretty much everyone's face that's covered with a mask does it.
