Every human has the right to seek asylum. Perhaps it is El Salvador's fault that they had to flee, but keeping human beings in conditions like they are- in the supposed best country in the world, is disgusting. Children have no choice where they stay and where they go. To a certain degree, neither do the parents. What the U.S. government is doing is wrong- no matter under whose administration, Obama or Trump. Even if the intention is not to kill these people, what is happening now is deliberate negligence. I remind you that Anne Frank did not die of being gassed, she died because the camp she was put in was overcrowded and filled with disease.
Sure we can seek asylum. But there's a process. I don't think coming to the US with a group of 1000 people is going to help your chances at all. There's no way they can process all of them. I'm an immigrant, I doubt like Trump. But it is common sense. Yes many immigrants come to work hard, but there are many bad ones too. We left our country to acquire from them, so we can't pretend we are all good. And the US should try to find out you are not a criminal or terrorist before coming. Any country would do that. With that said, yes we shouldn't treat them like animals either Specially with kids involved!. Now how much is real and how much is blown out of proportion I doubt know first hand obviously.
Same goes for asylum seekers. You have to see a judge, under the executive not legislative branch, and they can deny you asylum without even talking to you or letting you explain your case. The legal process is important, a functioning one is as equally important.
People trying to get in may not be eligible to get in line. For that, you must either have family relations in the country, an employer, or must apply for humanitarian protection. But the conditions for humanitarian protection are strict, and there are only a certain amount of people allowed in. An immigrant can not qualify as a refugee or an asylum seeker because of poverty or difficult economic conditions in their home country. What's more, the lines can be years long- and that's time that people do not have. Take a look at this https://www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org/research/why-don%E2%80%99t-they-just-get-line
The bar for getting in is not just making sure you aren't a terrorist.
Its great they want to solve problems in their country. However if we the United States want to be this shinning example we have always claimed to be for over 200 years. We need to fucking act like it. We are supposed to be better than this.
As an immigrant. Totally agree. The "shit hole countries" argument of that's why we leave, it's true. Of course delivery and sentiment of "why don't we get people from normay" was totally far from any common sense.
Nope. Trumpy is racist. The whole ideal of America is that where you come from doesn't matter. What matters is your will to better yourself and the quality of your character.
@famousone well, to be fair, we don't exactly hold citizens to the standard of "bettering themselves".
Anyway, again, my biggest issue is with how long it takes. It shouldn't take 5-10 years to determine if someone is a threat or beneficial. This has nothing to do with the individuals either, it has to do with the fact we are sorely lacking judges, lawyers, and most importantly, translators.
@funkmaster I agree. It all goes back to the public agencies probably not being funded enough to gon through the process as they should. And btw, to the guest above. Yes, the comment was very racist. But objectively speaking, yes those countries are not doing good therefore we leave. But I wouldn't call them shit holes. Our countries should become better so people don't have to leave, and starts with us.
But also I agree that not everyone wants to better themselves or all immigrants are saints. That's way we need a process
Listen up your bleeding-hearts...invite those seeking Asylum to live with you in your home. Clothe, feed, house and provide medical attention for them at YOUR expense like the American Taxpayers will do when they "seek asylum". THEN speak to me about "deliberate negligence". The American boat is full and quickly sinking with the thousands of "boarder-crashers".
You are right. Tax payers will pay for it. And many might not like it and all. But some just would like to see that even if denied as refugees, these people are treated with decency. Because people like you and me were just simply lucky. You did nothing to deserve being born an American and I am assuming here, but if not I'll say me...I did nothing to deserve coming to the US legally. I was simply lucky.
