Gaming disorder is treated like addiction because for some it is. They will play for hours, even days on end. There have been kids, teens, and adults who have died at computers or consoles because they couldn't stop. It is a real disorder and this isn't about balance, it is about reality.

Well said. Louder- for the kids in the back. Being a gamer isn’t a disorder. Being a hardcore gamer isn’t. Feeling compelled to 100% all your games or be top ranked isn’t. Playing a new game for hours and hours with little or no sleep, staying up too late every night gaming or even ignoring friends or family for game time isn’t. Gaming disorder applies to people who can’t stop. Who play until it kills them. Who spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on phone game add one or loot boxes despite not being able to afford to.
It’s a compulsion like gambling or drugs that will see you lie cheat and steal to get more. That doesn’t make you occasionally late for work or call in sick on release day- but that makes it impossible or close to the even hold a job. It’s an addiction- like any other. You can have a beer after work every day and never be an alcoholic. You can do a line at a party and not be a coke addict. When you cannot function without it and it starts to dictate your life- when it isn’t a hobby you’ve chosen but a compulsion you cannot- you may have gaming disorder.
