I heard they're remaking sword in the stone, which sounds great because imo sword in the stone is not very good, so it would be hard to fuck that movie up even more

I heard Lion King was getting bad reviews because critics saw through the guise of "bringing the story to a new generation" crap and just saw it as a soulless cashgrab.
Take all a bit fuzzy. I mean- just because somethings a cash grab doesn’t mean it can’t be enjoyable. Strips clubs and Disney parks exist to shill empty fantasy and take in your cash- and plenty of folks live both those things. So I don’t think the fact it’s a cash grab should factor into its ratings or even wether one chooses to participate. But.... some things are just considered amazing and well loved. The original lion king is an example. Whenever you make a sequel or reboot or spin off etc. you are starting behind the 8 ball since inevitably, because of the name, people will compare it to the one they love. Any change original is likely a change of something you liked or considered an integral part of the thing.
That creates a problem where movies like this are concerned, because if we judge it against the original we aren’t fairly judging the film itself. Would someone who watched the new version, grew up with it and surrounded by it in culture- see the original in their teens, twenties, etc and say “oh yeah. This version is much better than the one I grew up with...” I don’t know about that. It happens but more commonly it’s the other way around- people who were first exposed to later Star Trek series tend to think the original series is at best entertaining and fun or historically important- but most wouldn’t say it’s the better series if they grew up with later series.
Likewise a person might love the broadway version but dislike the original or remake movies. Full disclosure- I was a little older when lion king came out and animal based cartoons haven’t ever really been my favorite. I thought it was good but disliked parts of it and would never rate it in my top favorite Disney movies unless we were listing top 100 or something like that. So while I am biased to like the original more than a remake because I saw it first and enjoyed it (mostly-) I’m also not a person who was deeply effected by it or whom it was a significant film for.
But just speaking on re makes in general I try not to judge them against the original if I can help it because if I wanted to see the original- I could just watch the original. The whole point of watching a remake is to see a story you enjoy told differently or shown differently.
Treasure Planet is about a boy, Jim, who lives in a futuristicish world who goes on a journey throughout space trying to find treasure because his dead father gave him a special map before he died. The only father Jim ever had backstabs him and tries to kill him while attempting to steal the treasure as well. Jim barely makes it out, but the treasure planet is destroyed and he goes back to live with his mother in her small town cafe.
Atlantis is about a professor, Milo, who dedicates his life to researching an ancient civilization lost to the world. No one takes him seriously and he finds an American military team to take him to the civilization. Turns out, as Americans do, the military team, destroyed the life source and killed the king of the civilization. Milo ends up falling in love with the king's daughter and she saves her people by sacrificing herself.
Oh dang those seem like some sick movies tbh, I take it the animation is lovely? Though I am confused with Treasure Planet, does his dead father come back from the dead and back-stab him or does a father figure back-stab him?
