Religion itself isnt usually the problem. Like the Christian Bible, there are many different books with different lessons within them, but since the book was written my multiple people and has gone through many many many translations, the lessons of these books tend to severely contradict each other. These books are also very subject broad and and leave a lot if their stories open for individual interpretation.
Example: Old Testament God and New Testament God. In the old testament, Gos is wrathful. He gave up on humanity and fucking drowned everyone to start all over with a clean slate. NT God is much more loving and generous.
Anyway I'm digressing, so, religion becomes a problem when those in charge (like priests and pastors) take all these stories and interpret those that fit their views the closest. Such as anti gay messages, anti abortion, anti divorce ect ect. The religious leaders end up teaching their interpretations to those who will listen and slowly create blind faith
