India has a waste management problem yes. BUT- over 1.3 billion Indians produce a total of about 62 million tons of garbage a year. Compare that to 327 million Americans- roughly 1/4 the population- creating 230 million tons of trash a year, less than a quarter of which is recycled. So a quarter as many people, making almost 4x the trash. Many other developed nations also don’t fare so well- and many of head countries waste management plans involve shipping waste to countries like India or China- so it isn’t really fair to make them the “scape goats” to the problem. They certainly contribute- but for all our best efforts we aren’t exactly leading by example.
Plus, as long as the rich industrial states don't get their shit together in terms of reducing, reusing and recycling, emerging nations will always have an excuse for themselves.
