These tribes are from the Ecuadorian area. The major fires were/are in Brazil with some secondary focus in Paraguay, Peru, and Bolivia. The fire starters are presumed to be farmers burning back the forest for farmland. The fires this year with all the hype is actually less than previous years. The Global Forest Watch's records only go back to 2001 but 2002-2005, and 2007 all had a greater number of fires.
Well, good for the Australian bush but not really comparable.
There are areas where flora has evolved to sustain fires, where it either constantly or periodicly starts burning as a natural phenomenon. The plants having adapted to, or even are in need of fire are called pyrophytic. Most known pyrophitic trees are Sequoias, which even need fire for reproduction. Many pine trees are counted in, plus many types of flowers and - here it's getting interesting in towards your comment -eucalyptus trees.
Those areas are home to forest fires, us as a very ignorant species which has built homes right in this area is now thinking to "safe" something, if we extinguish it.
The rain forest (the name actually gives it away) is not to be counted into the above-mentioned areas. In the Amazon, fire has been brought to the forest since mankind showed up. Indogene people used fire to reclaim land as arable, which was no big deal considering the amount of agriculture being carried out by those few people.
And then capitalism kicked in. Now the rain forest disapears in benefit of food, fuel and narcotics for the so-called developed world, which then throws half of the food in the trash bin.
