They look like box noodles like Kraft.
And if they are she is plain wrong or broke as hell. Because you don't put box noodles like that in a baked macaroni and cheese.
You either put elbow or shells. Maybe if you want to get fancy Fusilli but not those stick box Kraft noodles. And both of those need to add some butter and milk because the cheese should be a sauce not a paste.
Also the one on the right should of layered the cheese slices not tossed torn up prices. There is nothing wrong with adding cheese slices to a baked Mac and cheese. But there is if your do that. Also if she wanted the cheese to melt not burn like it did she should of used a milk based cheese. Some cheese slices use soy and don't melt but burn instead.

Sorry, but the real "gourmet crime" here is to pretend that Mac'n'Cheese is a proper dinner. That is like a vivid discussion whether to serve Chardonnay or Riesling to your microwaved KFC left-overs.
They said it is to see who makes it for Thanksgiving. Kind of a pot luck family thing.

Not saying it wasn't yummy. I'm an overweight pothead, I've had my share of stoner snacks and enjoyed it, still do. It's just not what I'd serve to guests.
