what bit of indian law allows for this assuming the "phone" was limited to india?
was it a thing of like, pledging to the development of something with no actual promise of a delivered product or a donating to a company in the same way you donate to a patreon or a kickstarter or something?
What profits ??? all the orders were Cash on delivery.
the website itself was poorly designed, and took bookings for half a phone...
it was a big hype, but nothing happened beyond 2 days.
It's not the first time such a thing has happened. In the 30's, a man put an ad in the newspaper, asking for people to send 1$, no more, no less, to a certain adress before a given date. Any higher sum of money was refused. Hundred of thousands of people donated. At the given date, they waited. Nothing happened, a guy named Harold something was just insanely rich in a difficult financial context and the police had to explain to hundreds of angry citizens that no promise was made, they gave money and that was the end of it, everything was legal.
