Fun facts: there isn’t exactly “Braille.” There are actually a few types of “Braille.” The most commonly used are “type 1” and “type 2” in English speaking countries. “Braille” isn’t a language. Type 1 and 2 Braille represent the 26 letters of the “English” alphabet- but if you do not speak English or a language with a shared alphabet- anything in such Braille wouldn’t do you much good. Type 2 Braille also has contractions and punctuation. However less than an estimated 10% of the “blind” can read type 2 Braille.

Smart devices and changes towards digital media have played a part in making Braille a less user language. A good way to describe Braille to anyone familiar with the Pokémon games would be the “unknown” Pokémon- a substitution cypher except you feel it with your hands instead of seeing it (although the sighted can learn to read Braille by sight.)

To be proficient in Braille you must understand the language of that Braille, memorize the individual Braille meanings, and develop the sensitivity of touch to deep the differences. With the move to digital media, text to speech, descriptive captions etc- and the move away from physical media- many advantages to Braille aren’t as pronounced as they once were.

The blind still face challenges- things like text to speech aren’t anywhere near perfect, and things like pop up ads and ad cluttered sites can be far more of a problem for the blind than the annoyance e of the sighted. But Braille has seen a sharp decline since its height as more and more technology and design have come along to remove some of the challenges to the blind in everyday life.

People know about blind people, but do they think of them? Every original image posted on my blog has an image description to make things easier for blind people using screen readers. Funsubstance doesn’t make that an option.
