Cryo hits with a valid point yet again. But IS social media so useless? The majority of people didn’t take the event seriously- and the organizer billed it as a joke to boot for those not savvy enough to figure out it wasn’t real on their own. What’s more- the number of people who will say they’ll do something and the number who actually will is almost always not the same. Bet me that if it cost $50 or even $5 as a “reservation” fee to join the FB group there would have been anywhere near as many people?

For most people traveling to a remote area in Nevada for a prank with no advertised entertainment or attractions (whose page was pulled before the event) would be unlikely to begin with. Look at Fire festival. There’s an event almost exclusively promoted through social media that drew a huge crowd and grossed over $25 million dollars.

Now- stop and think about it for a second. Without false promises of luxury or grandeur, without offering ANYTHING that people couldn’t already (not) see, and basically just by posting a Facebook group and not trying to promote the event seriously AT ALL- the fact you could get more than 1 person to travel to a remote location with no distinguishing attractions asides a closed military base- shows there IS power in social media.

Really think about that. If millions signed up, and what? Hundreds showed up- that means that hundreds of millions of people had to be made aware of this thing just to get a small number to come. So if they had used traditional advertising methods- how many people could they reach? As a word of mouth joke they may have reached what? MAYBE a few hundred? And based on the percent of people who went vs those who saw it- that means you’d have statistically had about... 0 people yes?

Now say they’d gone through TV, radio, print ads, you’d need serious coverage- like a Super Bowl ad- to reach al the people they reached. You’re talking about spending millions on advertising for a free non profit event that was basically a joke- to get a few handfuls of attendees- vs spending $0 for the same or better exposure. So tell me again how social media is useless?

The first one was a ruse to get the government complacent, the real one is next year when the guards aren't prepared.
