That was one thing that surprised me when I went to America is the amount of roaches everywhere. I'm sure we have them in parts of Canada, and I'm sure lots of other countries have just as many or more. But I'd never really encountered them much and all of a sudden in places like Arizona there were at least a couple roaches skittering across the sidewalks or trapped in ceiling lights almost anywhere you went
Ew. That and the amount of gun crime is enough to put me off from ever going there. I've never seen a wild cockroach in my entire life here in England. I've seen a few in the insect sections of zoos though.
I'm not gonna lie - the first time you wake into a gas station and see a display case of hunting knives, shotguns, and knuckle-rings spelling out "hate" it can be a bit of a shock.
.
But that's hardly the entirety of the country haha. And truth be told even though I was kind of surprised by their propensity for ceiling lights, I was never actually BOTHERED by a cockroach. I imagine living there it would get more difficult. It also depends on the area you're in.
.
In Canada you pretty much have to write off Ontario if you dislike insects. They get black flies and horse flies and sand flies and mosquitos and dozens of other insects that I feel are probably far more unpleasant to deal with
I see a roach about 3-4x a year. Roaches are way down on my list of worries when it comes to bugs here. Termites and carpenter ants though... fuck them.
Oh, that reminds me... I was having a stogie yesterday and I found a hornet on the ground flipped over. I thought about helping it, but it was so cold outside it was basically dead already, just sort of twitching at the end. I wasn't going to kill it myself either, so I just left it there. Went out later and it was dead, still just left it there. Something came along in the night and ate it, because there was no body this morning <_<. I really want to know what it was that ate it.
A lot of wasps get kicked out of the hive to die this time of year iirc. But it could have been any number of things. Bird. Maybe some ants. An unintelligent dog perhaps
It was on my balcony, so it wasn't a dog. Either a bird or a house gecko. It probably wasn't warm enough for the gecko to go get it though, so I'm thinking bird. Probably one of the blue jays or robins.
