To be honest- I wasn’t planning to see it before. Sonic is a hard sell to me. It’s not exactly a story rich property to start with although it has some elements of a good story and some decent takes. But a character who’s one attribute is really “goes fast” makes for a more exciting game than it does fiction. BUT you could make a good Sonic story. One of the best I ever saw was a comic where Robotnik (Eggman) and Sonic were friends. Robotnik was a good guy who discovered the chaos emeralds and was researching them. In a lab accident he was turned into his evil mirror self and Sonic got his powers.
I really liked that because it gave him depth and created a somewhat tragic relationship and motivation beyond “evil guy wants evil powers.” It also made the chaos emeralds significant and mysterious. The evil robotic uses his good guy image to start an army- turning animals into villains, trying to rule everything and get the emeralds for their power. Sonic is trying to stop him and save those he’s turned- and hopefully find a way to turn Robotnik back- with an added tragedy being just about the only guy who could do it being Robotnik himself.
The writing was poor and it was thin- but I saw potential. But... every preview I’ve seen for Sonic the movie makes me cringe. Not just the old character designs- but the writing and the action and direction. So I don’t plan to see it. Not because they changed Sonic (which I’m glad for) but because it doesn’t look good and not anything about it ever suggested to me it would be good.
That said- of consider watching it on streaming when it’s out of theaters if I had nothing else and free time- and who knows? Maybe it will be amazing and the first reviews will drop and I’ll catch it in theaters.
On principal however I don’t see it as wise to reward a studio just for caving to fan backlash alone. You could redo the CGI and designs for the DOOM movie and it would still be the DOOM movie- guilty fun or cult classic at best. I don’t want to tell theaters that I’ll pay for a turd if they paint it the way I like. I’ll pay to see a good film, and send the message that to get my money you have to do better than 90% of the transformers franchise. You have to do better than trade on nostalgia properties. Give me something that looks like a good film and I’ll watch it. Redo the hedgehog all you want but from what I’ve seen there isn’t much worth watching there no matter how creepy or how “correct” they make the protagonist.
Lol. Confusing I know. “Looks good” can be read to mean “aesthetically pleasing” or “a well done quality film with story, writing, pacing, and craftsmanship in the art of story telling.”
TLDR: Not going to see the movie because it doesn't look good.
