Its to keep your food warm while you cook/bake other things, for example for a big thanksgiving meal, where you are serving several things.

yeah.... I just use it for extra pan storage. i don't know.... something just doesn't jive with me. i'm sure it's completely fine but a part of me feels like it's unhygienic to put food in there.
