In all seriousness tho other than a couple phrases that i had previously memorized, not really. For me the only times I spoke with people they either knew English or it was at a restaraunt where gesturing and pointing got the point across.
I would say something to the effect of "I want to order" in madarin and then point to the things I wanted and would thank them in mandarin. Most people, except shop keepers, would avoid trying to talk with us because they, just like us, knew that it wasn't likely to go anywhere as we couldn't understand eachother.
