It feels good to be right- although remembering that being right and being in power aren’t the same thing- and using a little tact can also feel better than being right and abrasive and dealing with potential consequences. Of course... one should especially make sure they are right before one decides to take a “hard stance.”
In this case... landlords can’t raise rent mid lease except in a VERY narrow set of circumstances- unless of course one is on a “month to month” lease in which case- with 30 days notice they can. But the fair housing act.... it doesn’t protect you from a landlord making decisions based on religion. It protects you from a landlord discriminating against you based on religion. Wether raising rent to a set of units based on a choice out of the Bible or not is “religious discrimination” would be a fun and likely expensive court case- but you aren’t being discriminated against because of YOUR religion- and you could argue the book isn’t so important as it could be chapters from a novel, diagram numbers from a science text book, literary numbers etc. and we wouldn’t call that religious discrimination- just a type of number randomization. By nature that doesn’t prove any person was targeted, and no religious or other freedoms were tampered with.
To go deeper- your landlord can’t ask for your religion. Can’t deny you housing, can’t charge you more rent because of your religion (of it being different than theirs.) They can’t forbid you from the regular enjoyment of your dwelling because of their religion- they can’t forbid drinking, eating certain foods, control what you watch on TV or what music you listen to or prevent you from actions that are part of your religion (unless there is a health/safety/noise violation in which case you may still observe the religious rite but must comply with these other laws and terms of a lease.) In some states you can’t be forbidden from religious displays on your rental property including the outer doors etc. things like this.
But if your landlord decides to paint all the units blue inside because they think they’re religion commands it- that’s THEIR freedom. They can paint their units whatever color they want. If they want to put in hardwood floors because they think carpet is an abomination to their deity- that’s their business. They could put in hardwood floors regardless.
That's funny, 18:21 talks about how the levites (which would be the tenants in this situation) have been given every tithe in Israel as an inheritance.
It also says above 21 (18:16) that the equivalent of the land lord has to redeem the firstborn of any from a womb be it man or beast and he must pay at a rate of 5 shekels for it.
The current value of 5 shekels is like a dollar USD so the firstborn of all his tenants have to be sold to him for a dollarish by the same passage that he miss interpreted which actually means the tenants get stuff not him.
