Yeah- they’re really blowing it. These 4 Disney Star Wars films are the highest opening box office of all Star Wars films or all time- and when adjusted for inflation (which isn’t a precise science..) Last Jedi is a narrow second for highest grossing film next to New Hope (which had 40 more years of theater re releases to hit its total.) In 6 years Disney has made back what it spent to buy the entire Lucas Arts company and all its combined IP’s... just off of Star Wars.
So... I dunnoh. They seem to be doing pretty well for the franchise. If you watch the Box office totals you’ll see they fall heavily from New Hope through ROTJ, the now often held as “best in the trilogy” Empire was once commonly held by many as a “least favorite” before Jedi took its place in the common cannon as weak link in the original series. The “prequel” trilogy was almost universally spat on by fans and critics before going through its “well... without Jar Jar it’s not so bad...” phase and now many laud the prequels. Prequel merchandise littered discount toy bins for the longest time. So can we say Disney is so dumb with Star Wars? Even when they only had certain licensing rights they were dpi pretty darn good for themselves with it.
Disney hasn’t made the Star Wars many die hard fans wanted to see- a similar complaint to Lucas’s prequels. They haven’t dug up EU (now “legends”.. I guess?) Stories that have been tread an re tread- moved in and out of cannon, and stepped all over each other for almost as long as Star Wars has been out. They moved away slightly from the EU general design- “what if like every important event for like 1,000 years... in an entire galaxy... revolves around like 3-4 families....”- instead saying “let’s tell a story fans haven’t seen yet...”
So sadly- we don’t get to see the events of Shadows or whatever your favorite EU property might be fold out on the big screen. No war with psychic bugs, Mara Jade, etc etc. or at least- maybe not quite the way it happened before since they may bring some or all back and left enough holes that one couldn’t say certain things NEVER happened.. just maybe not exactly as they did in previous lore... and we may not get to see 76 cloned Sith keep refusing to die.
But... they have their hands on a multimedia gold mine. They’re gonna mine it. So far just about the only thing Disney has failed to make work was power rangers. They may be losing long time fans... but the die hard fans aren’t likely to stop buying merchandise of the old films... which they’ll still get money for... and they are getting plenty of new fans- new generations of kids growing up loving the new movies. So... I dunnoh. Maybe they are smarter than they get credit for in all this....
While all that is correct, given what has happened, do you not think a Thrawn trilogy would have 1) made more money and 2) been a better story? Yeah, they've made money, but they made it despite, not because.
Lol. She was off base there for sure. I think the EU is full of gems and full of things many people- or “wider audiences” might not be keen on. There was a lot of good story there though- but in an age where a common complaint is studios rebooting and adapting and doing basically everything but make original content- I can’t fault them for saying: “let’s do a Star Wars story that hasn’t been done already.” Am I 100% satisfied with the new films? No. Are they exactly what I would want? No. Do I find them unwatchable or so bad they offend me? Also no.
I can agree with all that, but damn; what they did wasn't an off-road adventure along route 66; it was like driving a jeep off Long Beach while screaming that you're going to Japan... and then wondering why you only made it 30 feet.an
I honestly believe they are going to use The Mandalorian to have the Thrawn trilogy happen in the background; as they can't use any main character's POV now without turning Thrawn into Thanos; which is something I'd be fine with.
It's that 5 year thing. That has to be intentional. Obviously quite a lot will have to be changed, but they can still actually pull off the basic plot from point A to point B; especially because by using a different POV they don't need the main characters to physically show up; what they do can be established with dialogue.
I’ve sat through the Christmas special, the prequels, and all manner of Novel, game, comic, and tie in- ranging from just- terrible... to amazing. A new take is welcomed by me anyway- even if it’s not what I’d hoped or envisioned the final fates/outings of many of these characters to be.
Quick guys, we have to get the infinity stones into the van thats somehow still intact!
And we have to do it right now, mid-battle, instead of getting them as far away from Thanos and his army as possible!
Just like... really? REALLY?!
