The snake has bitten down, yes, but snakes don't always try and eat when they bite. The fact that he's holding on would imply to me 1) he doesnt realize it's not food or 2) perhaps his fangs got stuck (<- pure speculation on my part - I know little about hognose fangs).
.
Hognose tend to be an all bark, little bite species from what I've heard of them (hence sassy) so my guess would be he initiated a feeding response and is trying to eat the bread. However, the snake is unlikely to attempt to digest the entire piece whole (or even be able to). It's possible a small amount may get consumed, but I don't think that will be overly harmful to the snake as a one-off occurrence
I don’t know much about snakes but lizards will literally explode if you feed them bread their digestive systems aren’t made for it and are unable to digest it. I was thinking maybe it was the same for snakes but maybe not.
Hognose are adorable little devils. They puff themselves up and make a huge racket (hissing etc) but they are a species very inclined to actually bite from what I've heard of them. They do do a lot of "bluff striking," which is when a snake launches it's face at you but doesn't open it's mouth. Either way they're non venemous and overall harmless
Basically they are venomous, just not to humans, and their fangs are so far back in their mouth that they'd be unable to bite us with them, as they're only suitable for small prey.
Sort of lol.
.
You're right about them being venemous - most non-constricting snakes are at least a little venemous. I should have specified that it's basically a venom mild enough that most people won't have much reaction to it at all (but I was in a hurry) and therefore not really dangerous.
.
It CAN still cause a reaction in humans, though. It's usually quite mild if anyone notices it at all. And they can bite people, even being rear-fanged, it just tends to be something they have to work at a bit, and they really prefer not doing it
