This is supposed to be an argument for legalization of marijuana, but it becomes a compelling reason to illegalize or at least heavily regulate a bunch of other over-the-counter products.

A few things- firstly, various studies dispute the exact placement of certain substances for toxicity by effective dose- but generally they only move around a place or two and its splitting hairs. Secondly- we have to understand that “toxicity by effective dose” can be misleading- some substances it is far more common for users to exceed effective dose- alcohol being an example. We also must understand that many substances are commonly mixed with others, or behaviors and conditions that can exacerbate or create new danger.

In other words- toxicity by effective dose is not directly correlated to how dangerous a drug may be inherently. For instance- by dose effective dose- nutmeg beats GHB and sits right below heroine. Paint or solvent “huffing” varies in toxicity but can be EXTREMELY toxic at VERY low doses.

Likewise- toxicity of effective dose is a measure of just that- how toxic a substance is at a given dose. It does not and cannot accurately reflect both short term danger and overdose. Alcohol is highly toxic, but drinking after of vodka and never touching it again (assuming you live,) is not likely to have effects lasting more than a relatively short period. However chronic use of mildly toxic substances can cause damage that isn’t seen in single or occasional use. It is also reverent that toxicity doesn’t necessarily cover mental, hormonal, psychological, or other changes or dangers associated with substance use- especially chronic substance use.
