France, and egalitarian democracy. Say whaaat? Ok- so- as you see there- men’s fashion was once quite flamboyant. Ruffles, pleats, feathers, all manner of materials and textures, patterns, bright colors. Elaborate hair dos, wigs- even make up. Look at paintings of the time and you’ll see jewelry and high heels and platform boots. Ok. So what happened?

All this is about money see? Heels were often for riding horses. Horses were (and to a degree still often are-) for those with money. The bright colors and fine fabrics, furs and all that- not as common, all expensive. Living a life that let you wear such impractical stuff and not get it tattered and dirty? Not having to do work or activity that requires more practical clothing? Having servants to help you in and out of your elaborate costumes? All of that takes money- power- or at least gives the image you have them.

So- around the time egalitarian ideas started to get real popular, and revolutions started popping up- there were those who felt it prudent to maybe NOT advertise to the whole world- an often starving, impoverished and over worked world- that you had so much money you literally had to dress impractically fopish to have something to do with it all.

About this time there was a man who himself wasn’t particularly well off or noble of birth- but he was a regular in upper class society and the king of France adored him. This guy was a fashion icon. So he starts wearing just- like a short scarf- like a single ribbon around his neck. French aristocracy followed this trend to “simple but ornate” dress- and it spread- an example of early French influence on global fashion.

Again- the following period of history is marked by “peasant revolt” and other revolutions based in class- so the modern men’s suit evolved from this- it was a style of dress that was not overly showy or outwardly conspicuous in its status, and could be worn by the very wealthy as well as middle class administrative or other workers- so looking at a man at a party or on the street it wasn’t obvious if he was a millionaire or just a paper pusher. This both protected the wealthy from mob violence and helped to not provoke it through insensitivity.

@insertcreativename- thank you. I try to be. Sometimes it’s gotta be business, but in general I get invited out to a lot of parties or gatherings and what not, so I guess at least some of the time I am.
